We are delighted to be travelling back to the magical North East of England.
Well worth the journey. The spectacular coastline, with wide open beaches and rocky outcrops, is home to a number of magnificent castles built to see off the threat of invaders from the sea. This is an area where history really comes alive. We include some of the top visitor attractions in this region with visits to mighty Bamburgh Castle, the famous castle and the gardens at Alnwick plus a journey on to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
The sparsely populated and rugged countryside, dotted with market towns where the houses are built from stone, is a wonderful counterpoint to our superb city centre hotel. We return to the excellent 4* Copthorne Hotel, beautifully situated in the heart of Newcastle. Superb quality throughout and a great position for exploring the attractions of this lively and fun city!
Don't miss it - one of our best!
This hotel has been awarded a Travellers' Choice 2024 Award - meaning they consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor for enjoyment and value for money.

Meeting up with our excellent local guide to learn about the history of this region as we pass through the countryside and stunning coastline. We have two main excursion destinations today. Majestic Bamburgh Castle is perched on the stunning Northumberland coast overlooking the pristine sandy Bamburgh Beach. With over 1,400 years of history, this iconic fortress offers breathtaking views, fascinating exhibits, and beautifully restored rooms. Explore its rich heritage, from its role as a royal palace to its transformation into a Victorian visionary’s home. Wander through the sprawling grounds, marvel at the medieval architecture, and uncover tales of kings, knights, and legends. Entrance fee included.
We also visit the enchanting Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Steeped in ancient charm, this tidal island is famed for its dramatic priory ruins, picturesque castle, and serene landscapes. Explore centuries of history, from Viking raids to medieval monks, and stroll around the village with cozy cafes and artisan shops. Nature lovers will adore the island’s wildlife and sweeping coastal views. Accessible via a causeway at low tide, Lindisfarne offers a unique, tranquil escape. An unforgettable experience.
DAY 3
After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel we board the coach. Enjoy the typical Northumberland countryside on route to the stunning National Trust property, Cragside. This extraordinary country house & estate was the residence of famous Victorian inventor, Lord Armstrong and was the first in the world lit by hydroelectricity. Man-made lakes, tumbling waterfalls and gardens combine to form the surrounding fantasy mountain landscape imagined and engineered by inventor and arms manufacturer Lord Armstrong and his wife Lady Margaret. Wander amongst the towering trees in the Pinetum, explore the weaving paths and tumbling cascades in the Rock Garden and witness the changing seasons in the Formal Gardens. Entrance fee included.
