These much anticipated gardens were finally opened to the public in May 2021. The RHS Garden Bridgewater is the result of a multi-million pound transformation of the historic Worsley New Hall estate, a huge 154 acre site in Salford near Manchester. Built for the 1st Earl of Ellesmere between 1840 and 1845, the grand Gothic-style mansion was designed by the architect Edward Blore and had glorious, formal landscaped gardens. Over the years the entire estate had fallen in to disrepair. The resulting development has been described as the largest undertaking in the 211 year history of the RHS by its Vice President, Alan Titchmarsh.

Now home to 11 stunning garden spaces, including the largest Victorian walled garden in England. The project was overseen by renowned landscape gardener Tom Stuart-Smith, the gardens bring together world-class planting, community initiatives stunning woodland and much much more. The striking larch-clad RHS Garden Bridgewater’s Welcome Building houses an arrivals hall, shop and café and overlooks the 1.4 acre Moon Bridge Water lake at the rear and leads out onto the Worsley Welcome Garden. Beyond is the Walled Garden, using the surviving brick walls from the original Hall - this is one of the many highlights of the gardens including a Mediterranean and Asian Paradise Garden with its central lily pond, a restored Kitchen Garden, Community Grow and more.

There are 3 kilometres of pathways that lead on to the estate’s woodland, where you can find the wooden bridges that span the Chinese Streamside Garden, as well as a seven-acre Woodland Play area and Ellesmere Lake with its historic island grotto. Beyond this is Victoria Meadow, a low lying, 21-acre area that’s slowly being turned into a wildflower haven, reintroducing the biodiversity lost as a result of intensive farming.

Come and have a look.
