DAY 3

STRASBOURG - BREISACH

This morning, the included excursion is a guided tour of Strasbourg and its cathedral. Discover Strasbourg from the water! We’ll see all the great sites on the riverbanks, from Petite France—listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988—to the European Quarter, where institutions such as the Council of Europe and the European Parliament are located. After, we’ll continue on foot to the magnificent Gothic cathedral, built over three centuries. The famous west front is decorated with thousands of figures, and its spire measures over 466 feet. The cathedral is built out of pink sandstone from the nearby Vosges Mountains, which gives it its characteristic hue that changes according to the sunlight and the color of the sky. Standing before the symbol of the city, you’ll understand why Victor Hugo called it a “gigantic and delicate” marvel. It is one of the very few Gothic churches with only one tower. Among its wonders are the stained glass windows, including the 46-foot-high Rose Window. The great organ is a masterpiece to see as well as to hear. And the astronomical clock is a Renaissance treasure not to be missed. We'll return by tour boat to the ship, and spend the afternoon cruising to Breisach. Take advantage of this downtime by enjoying the views from the Sun Deck or participating in an onboard activity. Onboard presentation. We'll arrive in Breisach at the end of the day. Enjoy an evening of entertainment on board. We'll remain in port overnight.

DAY 4

BREISACH - Colmar - BASEL

Enjoy a free morning in Breisach. Amble through the picturesque streets of this small city sitting on the banks of the Rhine River. Take a break and enjoy a treat in one of the cafés or icecream parlors in the main square. Don't miss a visit to the cathedral, where great panoramic views of the Rhine and Black Forest await. Return to the ship at your own pace. In the afternoon, we have included a guided tour of Colmar and the Hansi Village and its museum. We will leave by coach for Colmar. Discover the charming old town and its historic center with prestigious monuments such as the Maison des Têtes, built at the beginning of the 17th century and named as such for
the 111 heads decorating the outside. Strolling through the city is the best way to take in the beauty of the colors, sights, and sounds in Alsace. The tour will continue on to the Hansi Village and its museum. Jean-Jacques Waltz, also known as Oncle Hansi, was an Alsatian artist and activist considered a French hero during both World Wars for his critiques of the Germans. The museum traces his legacy through his considerable works and the impact he had on Alsatian folklore. We’ll return to the ship and spend the rest of the afternoon cruising to Basel. Tonight is the special gala evening dinner.

The apex of this excursion is Jungfrau Station. Perched at an altitude of over 11,000 feet (3,454 meters), the station offers astonishing views of the Great Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks. The train ride is an unforgettable experience combining adventure, nature, and remarkable engineering. We will enjoy a special Fondue lunch in a restaurant at the top! ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Please dress sensibly during the excursion to Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe, you will travel to high mountains and reach an altitude of over 11,330 feet (3,454 meters). Freezing temperatures exist in summer, just as in winter. Basic equipment for this excursion includes a coat, closed-toe shoes, gloves/mittens, hat, and sunglasses to protect your eyes from the high-mountain sun.

What are the medical precautions to consider when traveling by train through the Jungfrau Region?

Trains allow for quick transportation to the higher altitudes. As the trains climb higher, the air pressure drops and, consequently, the oxygen level does as well. People in good health can adapt to the rapid increase in medium altitudes and high altitudes up to 13,100 feet (4,000 meters) without any adverse effects. Severe altitude sicknesses (altitude edemas) appear, at the earliest, after 6 to 12 hours at altitudes of over 8,200 feet (2,500 meters). Therefore, altitude sickness is unlikely during our short stay at the Jungfraujoch. Nevertheless, do not set out on high-altitude journeys unless you feel like you're in perfect health. High altitudes can be risky for certain heart, lung, vascular, and blood diseases. Medical advice is recommended under certain circumstances.
