Fantastic day out to Salisbury including entrance to the remarkable Cathedral.

Salisbury Cathedral recently celebrated  being a place of worship, welcome, and hospitality for 800 years and has the tallest spire in the country - a breathtaking 404ft. As you approach the city from any direction you can tell how this magnificent building guided travellers, merchants, and pilgrims through the centuries, to the historic city.

Inside the Chapter House, you can also discover one of only four surviving original Magna Carta and view a special exhibition explaining its origins and continuing relevance to our lives today.

Our day includes entrance with a self-guided tour but there are volunteer guides stationed around the inside to offer information and advice. On Tuesdays there is a demonstration of the medieval clock and also a stonemason's demo in the cloisters. After over 30 years work on the main building, the Cathedral exterior will be free of all scaffolding in 2024. See this magnificent Gothic building as it would have been seen in the mid-1300s, when the mighty Spire was completed. Of course, work on a building like this is never ending (work will continue on the Cloisters) but the removal of the scaffolding is a milestone in the history of this ancient building - and in the lives of the masons and glazier, some of whom have devoted their whole lives to this project.

Free time after to explore the historic jewel of Salisbury - named as one of the world's Top 10 Cities to visit in 2015 by Lonely Planet.  So much to see, with wonderful medieval buildings, Museums, historic houses to visit, public gardens and riverside walks. There is excellent independent shopping, a range of coffee shops and cafes plus some fine traditional pubs. If you do not want to visit the Cathedral, fine - no problem at all. Tuesday is also Market Day in the town.

Great place to spend a day.
